ELIGIBILITY FOR EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The Board of Education believes that extra-curricular activities are an important component of the district’s educational program and encourages all students to participate.  Extra-curricular activities are defined as any activity sponsored by the school community that does not bear academic credit.  These include, but are not limited to: athletics, dramatic productions, Science Olympiad, honor society, student council and school dances.

However, the Board of Education believes that the primary responsibility of each student is to maintain passing grades in all subjects. It therefore expects students participating in extra-curricular activities to meet this minimum academic standard.

The Board directs the Administration, in consultation with the Athletic Director and other interested faculty members, to establish procedures that encourage students involved in extra-curricular activities to strive for and maintain academic success.  These regulations should apply equally to students who are active participants in the activity and to those who are spectators.

In addition, the privilege of participation in extra-curricular programs will carry the following responsibilities:

1.         Student shall not use or possess tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs except as prescribed by a physician.  This standard applies to the student conduct off school grounds. (See policy 5300, Code of Conduct.)

2.         Student shall follow the rules established by the coach or advisor.

3.         Students must be in attendance for a full day on the day of the activity.  Exceptions may be allowed if students provide verification of professional or college appointments.

ELIGIBILITY FOR EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

REGULATION

Roxbury Central School establishes the following three levels of academic achievement for those students participating in extra-curricular activities:

Level 1            Full Participation

Students who meet or exceed course requirements and expectations.

Level II           Academic Warning

Students who are failing 1 subject will be placed on academic warning.  Students and parents will be notified via the guidance office and will be encouraged to seek help through teachers, advisors or coaches.

Students who are no longer failing after 2 weeks will be returned to full participation status.  Parents will be notified of the change in the student’s status.

A student who is still failing after 4 weeks will be referred to the Roxbury Instructional Support Team (RIST) Committee.  The RIST committee will then evaluate the student’s status and determine appropriate services and interventions.

Level III         Academic Intervention

Students who are failing 2 or more courses will not be allowed to associate or participate in extra-curricular activities for a 2 week period.

Students and parents will be notified via the guidance office and will be encouraged to seek help through teachers, advisors and coaches.

A student who is no longer failing any courses after the mandatory 2 week period will return to full participation status.  Parents will be notified of the change in the student’s status.

A student who is failing one course after the mandatory 2 week period will be moved to academic warning status.  Parents will be notified of the change in the student’s status.

A student who is still failing 2 or more courses after the two week period will be referred to the RIST committee who will then evaluate the student’s status and determine appropriate services and interventions.

Procedures and Guideline

A list of students who fall into levels II and III above shall be generated bi-weekly from the faculty by noon on Friday.  The guidance department will distribute the list to the appropriate personnel the following Monday (or the next day of school if Monday is a Holiday).  A two week period is defined as a Monday to the second following Monday.

A failing course grade is defined as one that falls below a 65.  A student may not be referred based on lack of assignments unless these contribute to a calculated overall failing grade.
