A note from the editor:
Well we in 1R have jumped into the 21st century. Our web page, thanks to Valerie and Ms. Ware is on the internet. Go to www.roxburycs.org, then click on "classrooms", and finally click on Mrs. Riley’s First Grade. It is our first attempt and I think we did a great job. This newsletter and the spelling words for the week will be updated every Friday. Go there with your child and enjoy. We had an assembly on Friday, all about our character education word for November, kindness. I am sure that all the students in our school will try to be kinder to each other this month.
The week in review:
In math we are learning number facts, addition word problems, and subtraction word problems too. We are working on the double family facts, the one family facts, and the two family facts. Look for fact cards in your new Friday Folder. A folder with all our work will come home Friday’s. Please go over the work and newsletter with your child and send back the folder on Monday. It is a more organized way to show off our hard work and important letters. In Social Studies we all made a picture of our home, the fire exit plan, and meeting spot outside. I will share this with the Roxbury Fire Department. In Science we are wrapping up our unit on insects and spiders. Bears and Polar Bears are next. In Reading and Writing Workshops we are reading and writing Non-Fiction books/stories. Gail Gibbons is our author of the month. In spelling we continue to work on the sight words list and we are learning the vowels as well. So short "I" was the vowel this week and next week too. Look over the list of sight words that is attached to the "Friendly News Notebook" that comes home every evening. Speaking of evening, we are also learning about the difference between morning, afternoon, evening, and night.
Upcoming events:
