Superintendent's Search Process

BOARD BEGINS THE SEARCH FOR OUR NEW SUPERINTENDENT

After serving the District for more that sixteen years as Principal and as Superintendent, Tom O'Brien will be retiring on January 2, 2020. It is unusual in our time for a school administrator to spend so many years in one district. It is much more common for an administrator to take a new position in another district after a few years. When he was Principal, Tom served under two different Superintendents. During the eleven years Tom has been our Superintendent, we have had two Principals. Tom's longevity has had a significant impact on our school. More than a half of our employees have been hired during Tom's tenure. None of our students and few of our parents know a time when Tom was not an administrator here in Roxbury. 

I am sure that everyone joins me in wishing Tom all the best as he enters into the next adventure of his life. He will remain a part of the Roxbury community as he and Laura have no plans to move.

Hiring a Superintendent is one of the most important responsibilities of a Board of Education. We have been elected by you to oversee the operation of the school district. The Superintendent in turn is accountable to the Board for the successful management of all aspects of the school--from administering board policies; to recommending the appointment of new employees; to directing the educational program; to managing the district finances; to overseeing the upkeep, repairs and improvements to the school facilities; to maintaining a positive relationship with all segments of the larger community. Finding the right fit is vital so that we can continue to strive to meet our stated mission of providing a safe and caring environment in which our students can develop academically, creatively and socially.

The Board of Education has appointed Nick Savin, our BOCES District Superintendent as our consultant to guide us in this process. With his help, we created a search timeline which lays out the steps we will be following over the next months. A key part of this process is to get input from the district employees and from the community about the attributes they think are important in a school superintendent. We met with the employees in March. Now, we have created an anonymous survey we are asking everyone to complete. The board will use this information when we create our advertising brochure and when we interview candidates.

For those of you who would rather use paper, you may download the survey from the link on this page. Surveys will also be available in the main office of the school, at the Roxbury Town Hall and at the Grand Gorge Civic Center and can be dropped off at those sites.
