Maria Johnson

Roxbury's own Maria Johnson has been selected as a recipient of a 2022 New York State Senate Outstanding Librarian Award.   New York State Senator Sean Ryan, Chair of the Senate Libraries Committee, announced the recipients of these awards on April 8th.

To mark National Library Week, Senator Ryan solicited nominations from across New York for librarians who go above and beyond to serve their communities. Nominations came in from every corner of the state and 10 honorees were chosen, one from each region of New York. Each librarian selected will receive a framed New York State Senate Proclamation.

Senator Sean Ryan said, “This year’s nominees included a wide range of admirable librarians from libraries of every kind throughout New York. Just being nominated shows how important their hard work has been to members of their community. While the selection process was difficult, the 10 award winners stood out for their noteworthy dedication to their profession and to the people they serve.”

Maria has spent countless hours creating a robust library program for her students and staff. She develops a love of reading in her primary students, who eagerly listen to Maria reading stories or showcasing her storytelling skills. During the COVID closure, Maria created her own library online, and connected with students daily. She read books aloud, and posted daily to make sure students were still able to access good literature.

This award is  well deserved, and we are so proud and thrilled for the fabulous Mrs. Johnson.  Thank you for all you do at RCS!
